NORDIC WALKING — A REAL SPORT FOR REHABILITATION AND LIFE PRESERVATION
We are athletes and the Nordic Walking Association of North America (NWANA).
We created this website because we know that proper sport-based Nordic Walking technique delivers real clinical outcomes in chronic disease, post-COVID conditions, and fall-risk populations — where ordinary walking or “recreational poles” do not work.
We offer your team (physicians, rehabilitation specialists, heart failure / COPD / post-COVID professionals) training in correct Nordic Walking technique, so you can integrate it into your programs and achieve documented improvements: increased 6MWD, VO₂ max, reduced dyspnea, reduced fatigue, and reduced fall risk.
Expert Support for Clinical Integration
Why proper technique is not optional
Many programs teach Nordic Walking in a simplified way: “it’s about enjoyment — technique is not critical.” This may be acceptable for healthy individuals walking socially. But in chronic disease, post-COVID recovery, rehabilitation, or high fall-risk populations — this does not work.
When technique becomes the clinical mechanism
Documented effects — increases in 6MWD by dozens of meters, VO₂ max improvements of 10–25%, dyspnea reduction by 1–2 Borg points, faster recovery trajectories, and reduced fall risk — are achieved only with correct sport-based Nordic Walking technique as defined by NWANA. Without it, Nordic Walking is merely a walk — not therapy.
Be cautious of “certifications” that do not ensure true technical mastery: they may fail the very patients who need results the most.
What We Offer to Healthcare and Rehabilitation Professionals
We respect your expertise in medicine and rehabilitation. We do not interfere with your treatment protocols. We offer to train your team in our sport-based technique so you can apply Nordic Walking in your programs in a high-quality and safe way.
Training for Your Organization’s Staff
We deliver structured training in NWANA Nordic Walking technique (our proprietary sport-based methodology) for physical therapists, rehabilitation specialists, instructors, nurses, and allied health professionals. After training, your team will be able to integrate Nordic Walking competently into your protocols.
Expert Consultation for Program Integration
Careful, respectful support in adapting Nordic Walking technique to your current programs: cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, post-COVID recovery, fall-prevention programs. We are technique consultants, not treatment decision-makers.
Masterclasses and Professional Events
Masterclasses led by the President of NWANA — multiple-time Latvian national champion and World Championship medalist. We can deliver sessions for your team, patients, and professional conferences/seminars.
Organizations that implement such programs often receive additional grants for physical activity and prevention. We help make your program more effective and better justified.
Evidence Base: The Key Metric — 6MWD
6-minute walk distance (6MWD)
The 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) is a widely accepted prognostic marker in the United States for hospitalization risk, mortality, and quality of life in chronic heart failure, COPD, and post-COVID populations.
Full list of sources is available upon request.
Condition: Chronic Heart Failure
Improvement with proper NWANA technique:
- 6MWD increase by dozens of meters (up to ~100 m in selected studies); VO₂ max +10–25%
Clinical and economic impact:
- reduced hospitalization and mortality risk; increased independence and quality of life
Condition: COPD
Improvement with proper NWANA technique:
- 6MWD increase by dozens of meters; dyspnea reduction by 1–2 Borg points
Clinical and economic impact:
- fewer exacerbations and hospitalizations; patients regain confidence to leave home
Condition: Post-COVID Syndrome
Improvement with proper NWANA technique:
- 6MWD increase by dozens of meters; reduction in chronic fatigue
Clinical and economic impact:
- faster return to work and daily life
Condition: Fall Risk (Older Adults)
Improvement with proper NWANA technique:
- improved balance, coordination, and confidence in movement
Clinical and economic impact:
- reduced treatment costs related to falls (~$50–80B/year in the U.S., CDC)
